Introduction
This report provides statewide average standing timber (stumpage) prices for pine, oak, and mixed hardwood sawtimber; pine chip-n-saw; and pine and hardwood pulpwood, based on data from Timber Mart-South.
Timber prices can vary considerably; therefore, these averages may not reflect specific stumpage values for a particular stand of timber or within a specific region of the state. Given the variability of prices based on location, species, product, access, and distance to the mill, professional assistance is recommended for the valuation of your standing timber. Conversion Factors
Standardizing timber measurements ensures that buyers and sellers can accurately compare market data, as prices are often reported in weight (tons) while local contracts may still utilize volume-based units like board feet or cords. These factors allow for a precise translation between different regional measurement systems, ensuring that valuations remain consistent regardless of the unit of measure required by a specific mill or logger.
To convert quarterly prices from dollars per ton to conventional prices per thousand board feet (MBF) or per cord, apply the following factors:
Pine
Sawtimber (tons/1000 bd. ft. Scribner) 7.0
Chip-n-saw (tons/1000 bd. ft. Scribner) 8.0
Pulpwood/chip-n-saw (tons/st. cord) 2.68
Hardwood
Sawtimber (tons/1000 bd. ft. Doyle) 9.0
Pulpwood/chip-n-saw (tons/st. cord) 2.9
